چکیده

The dissociation between peripersonal (within reaching) and extrapersonal space (beyond reaching) has been reported using the line bisection task in left neglect patients and in healthy participants. Furthermore, this dissociation can be modulated by tool use. We conducted two experiments to compare line bisection in peripersonal (i.e., 30, 60 cm) and extrapersonal space (i.e., 90, 120 cm). Healthy participants bisected visual lines using sticks and a laser pointer, according to the experimental paradigm of Longo and Lourenco (2006). In Experiment 1 participants performed line bisection in a real environment, whereas in Experiment 2 participants performed line bisection in a virtual environment. Results from both experiments revealed an abrupt midpoint shift from the peripersonal to the extrapersonal space but only when a laser pointer was used. We confirm that peripersonal space can be extended to extrapersonal space by tool use. Notably, virtual reality can be a useful means for studying the dissociation between peripersonal and extrapersonal space and their interaction by means of tool use. An exploratory fNIRS study with immersive virtual reality: a new method for technical implementation

For over two decades Virtual Reality (VR) has been used as a useful tool in several fields, from medical and psychological treatments, to industrial and military applications. Only in recent years researchers have begun to study the neural correlates that subtend VR experiences. Even if the functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is the most common and used technique, it suffers several li...

Effects of prismatic adaptation on judgements of spatial extent in peripersonal and extrapersonal space.

Recent research has shown that visuomotor adaptation to a lateral displacement of the visual field induces significant perceptual aftereffects in normal observers, and in right hemisphere patients with spatial neglect [Neuroreport 11 (2000) 1899; Nature 395 (1998) 166]. These findings suggest that adaptive realignment following prism exposure induces a bias in visual space perception, even in t...

An ERP Investigation on Visuotactile Interactions in Peripersonal and Extrapersonal Space: Evidence for the Spatial Rule

The spatial rule of multisensory integration holds that cross-modal stimuli presented from the same spatial location result in enhanced multisensory integration. The present study investigated whether processing within the somatosensory cortex reflects the strength of cross-modal visuotactile interactions depending on the spatial relationship between visual and tactile stimuli. Visual stimuli w...

Extending the Body to Virtual Tools Using a Robotic Surgical Interface: Evidence from the Crossmodal Congruency Task

The effects of real-world tool use on body or space representations are relatively well established in cognitive neuroscience. Several studies have shown, for example, that active tool use results in a facilitated integration of multisensory information in peripersonal space, i.e. the space directly surrounding the body. However, it remains unknown to what extent similar mechanisms apply to the...

Low arousal modulates visuospatial attention in three-dimensional virtual space.

Clinical, experimental, and functional imaging studies suggest overlapping neuronal networks and functional interactions of alertness and visuospatial attention within the right hemisphere of the brain. To examine the interaction of arousal and visuospatial attention in peripersonal and extrapersonal virtual space, we tested 20 healthy male adults during 24 hr of sleep deprivation at four point...
